The official opening of Uganda Martyrs Catholic Parish -Rugombe was on 13 October 2024 under the theme: “Called to become Saints together (1Cor1:2). This is the 35th Parish of Fort Portal diocese with its first Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Francis Xavier Musiime and assited by Rev. Fr. John Mary Byamukama. The new Parish has three Sub Parishes with 15 Church Centers.
The name of the new born Uganda Martyrs Catholic Parish- Rugombe was adopted beginning July 2024. Prior to that, it was originally called St. William’s Catholic Church-Mihondo. It had been dedicated to St. William since 1990, when Fr. Richard Potthast, the Parish Priest by then secured a donation of 100 iron sheets for Mihondo Catholic Church from his American friend called William Cosler.
Etymologically, the word “Mihondo”(according to the surving elders around), derives from the original main activity of blacksmith that used to be carried out from the area way back during the 19th Century. It is believed that way back by then, people who were specialized in the art of blacksmith used to fabricate different objeects by using hammers and during the process, they used to hit their objects hard so that to put them in their desired shapes. Therefore, they used to “Kuhonda” literally meaning to “hit” all the time. From this blacksmith activity of “Kuhonda”, there was derived the area,s name.
The new name “Uganda Martyrs Catholic Parish-Rugombe” has been adopted with the intention of dedicating the new Parish to the intrcesion of Uganda Martyrs, on the 60th Anniversary of the canonisation of Uganda Martyrs, while assuming the name of the nearest town of Rugombe Town Council where the Parishh is located.
